28. (1) The remuneration payable under a contract of employment may be paid in money or in kind, which expression means payment by the provision of food, a dwelling place or such other allowances and privileges as may be agreed in the contract of employment: Provided that —
at least fifty per cent of the total remuneration shall be paid in money;
no payment in kind shall include any noxious drugs or intoxicating liquor; and Section 29 Labour Act (2021 Revision) Page 22 Revised as at 31st December, 2020 c
any payment in kind must be fairly evaluated on the basis of its cost to the employer.
The money wages of an employee shall be paid in legal tender, provided however that the payment of wages by cheque, by direct deposit or by postal order shall be permitted if it is with the express consent of the employee, which consent may be withdrawn on one calendar month’s notice, provided that such consent may not be unreasonably withheld or withdrawn.
