Where, after the lapse of six months from the time of its being first held by the police, the owner of the police property remains untraced, that property shall, if brought to the police by a member of the public, be handed over to that member of the public and if brought in by a police officer shall, if it takes a form other than money currently in circulation, be sold by auction as hereinafter provided.
