General jurisdiction of youth courts

4. (1) Youth courts shall have jurisdiction to try all summary offences committed by young persons in the Islands.
A youth court shall, in addition to the powers conferred by this Act, have the same powers in relation to the exercise of its jurisdiction as a court of summary jurisdiction which is not a youth court.
Where a young person is charged with a summary offence — Youth Justice Act (2021 Revision) Section 5 c Revised as at 31st December, 2020 Page 9
on that person’s own; or
jointly with another young person, the Clerk of the court shall arrange for the charges to be heard by a youth court.
On hearing —
a charge against a young person; or
any application in criminal proceedings with respect to a young person, a youth court may proceed to hear the charge or application notwithstanding that it is discovered after the commencement of the hearing that that person is not a young person.
Where —
any offence is committed by a person before that person attains the age of seventeen; and
that person is not tried for that offence until after that person has attained that age, that person may be tried before any court. Assignment of charges to courts
