Functions of the Council

The Council shall have the following functions —
to encourage and promote the upholding of the rule of law;
to promote high standards of professional conduct by attorneys-at-law;
to regulate the practice of law in the Islands;
to encourage and promote the study of law;
to supervise legal education and practical legal training leading to local qualification for admission as an attorney-at-law;
to establish or supervise a system of law reporting;
to carry out the functions imposed on the Council under the Proceeds of Crime Act (2020 Revision), in relation to attorneys-at-law, in accordance with the assignment of the Council as the Supervisory Authority under section 4(9) of that Act; and
to carry out such other functions as are imposed on the Council by this Act or any other Act.
The Council may establish committees for the purposes of advising the Council on, or performing, any of its functions under this Act or any other Act and a committee established under this subsection may comprise —
members of the Council only; or
members of the Council and persons who are not members of the Council.
The Council may, by written instrument, delegate to any committee of the Council or other person any of its functions under this Act or any other Act together with any powers (except this power of delegation) which the Council determines is necessary or expedient to enable the committee or other person to carry out the delegate function.
