21. (1) On completion of the registration of a ship, the Registrar of Shipping shall issue a certificate of registry in respect of the ship.
A certificate of registry may be issued for an indefinite period or for a specified period at the discretion of the Registrar of Shipping, and where a certificate is issued for a specified period —
it may be extended or re-issued at the end of such period for a further specified period; or
replaced with a certificate of registry valid for an indefinite period, in the Registrar’s discretion.
A certificate of registry issued for a specified period or extended or re-issued for a further specified period may be issued on such terms and conditions as the Registrar of Shipping may specify.
A certificate of registry issued for a specified period, or extended or renewed for a further specified period, shall become invalid at the end of such period Merchant Shipping Act, 2024 Section 22 c Act 1 of 2024 Page 35 unless further extended or renewed and, upon the certificate of registry becoming invalid, the registration of the ship shall be deemed to be terminated.
In the event that the registration of a ship is terminated in accordance with this section, section 8(3)(a) shall apply with respect to any registered mortgages relating to the ship.
